Amsterdam’s city centre is located south of the IJ and the central station. The oldest part of the city is the ‘Wallen’, nowadays a well-known prostitution area. Around the oldest part, the canals developed in a half-moon shape during the 17th century. On August 1st 2010, the canal system was placed on the UNESCO world heritage list.
